Software program that lets you connect to a remote computer by using a modem to send and receive information over a phone line. The comms software will dial the phone number and display information that's received, as well as send any text that you type on your keyboard. Some on-line services such as CompuServe and Microsoft Network have their own comms software that can only be used with this service.
